West Northamptonshire Council to Refocus Sustainability Efforts

West Northamptonshire Council’s Cabinet is set to consider a proposal next week that would refocus the Council’s sustainability work toward practical, high-impact projects that directly benefit residents, reduce energy bills, and support local businesses.

While WNC has made strong progress under its Sustainable West Northants strategy—earning recognition from the Investors in the Environment scheme—the new political administration is proposing a shift in priorities. This includes replacing existing Net Zero targets for operational and borough-wide emissions with a more realistic, locally focused approach.

If approved, the updated strategy would:

– Prioritise projects with tangible local benefits
– Continue publishing an Annual Sustainability Report
– Retain environmental accreditation work
– Use the term “Environmental Impact” in future reporting to reflect the broader focus

Cllr Mark Arnull, Leader of the Council, said the aim is to deliver better outcomes and value for money by focusing on what the Council can directly influence. Cllr Nigel Stansfield added that while global climate change remains critical, the refocus acknowledges the Council’s limited control over wider global outcomes, and instead targets local environmental improvements.

📅 Cabinet will meet on Wednesday 16 July at 6pm at The Forum, Towcester. The meeting will be livestreamed on WNC’s YouTube channel and the agenda is available on the Council website.
